The ‘vintage’ aesthetic has been making a comeback in recent years. And with it, more and more people are digging up their grandfather’s cameras, records, mechanical watches.
With this project, I wanted to explore the motivations behind such a trend - what is it about the analog that attract us? I define 'analog' as any device that does not consist of any digital components.
THE BACKSTORY
I collect old film cameras, because there is something beautiful in the images they produce, and the cameras in themselves.
I like old things.
They have 'soul'.
They contain untold stories.
They pass through the hands of so many, and therefore are testimonies of its owners' existence on earth.
Perhaps it is the knowledge that they have survived through time that compels us, in a time
where things appear and disappear so quickly,
where we are never quite sure what will happen tomorrow,
where nothing seems to stay the same long enough.
My research into the ‘analog trend’ led me to the conclusion that people today are seeking:
-
Authentic, emotional experiences
-
To slow down
-
Tangibility; something they can touch and understand

Instead of arguing against digital devices, or promoting analog devices outright, I want to magnify these qualities and remind people that there is more to the world than in our screens.
